Millions of New Yorkers are preparing to vote in pivotal elections for president, the State Legislature, and key congressional races that could sway control of the House. Additionally, voters will consider several ballot proposals including a statewide constitutional amendment and adjustments to New York City's governing charter.

Proposition 1, on all state ballots, proposes a constitutional amendment to enshrine reproductive rights. Other topics include protections against discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, and disability, supported significantly by Democrats but opposed by Republicans and anti-abortion activists.

In New York City, Propositions 2 through 6, crafted by a Charter Revision Commission, aim to alter the city's charter. The changes include giving the Department of Sanitation authority over certain public spaces and requiring earlier fiscal impact estimates for council legislation. They also outline new procedures for public safety legislation and enhance capital planning processes, among others.

Critics argue these measures may consolidate mayoral power, reducing council influence and potentially diminishing government responsiveness. The proposals will be presented clearly due to a recent law mandating eighth-grade reading level language.

As early voting starts in late October and continues into November, voters can check local resources for polling information.
